The Hollywood Argyles scored a hit with the novelty classic "Alley-Oop," and established themselves as primarily novelty artists. Lead vocalist Gary Paxton apparently recorded "Alley-Oop" while under the influence of "hard cider," which created the song's distinctive slurred sound. With "The Bug-Eyed Man," Paxton imitated that vocal style. According to rumor, Paxton took the novelty act into his personal life when he became romantically involved with Tammy Faye Bakker.

Alley Oop, created in 1933 by V.T. Hamlin, is drawn by Jack Bender and written by Carole Bender. The classic caveman comic strip is syndicated worldwide by Newspaper Enterprise Association.
